When to get help
Pause here
Get medical review if the area is very large or painful, has not started healing within 10 days, comes with swollen painful gums or mouth sores, or affects someone who is pregnant or has weakened immunity. Blisters near an eye, eye pain, a worsening red eye, light sensitivity or vision changes need same-day assessment. Never kiss a newborn while a cold sore is active.
